Tuscia weather, month by month
The climate of the Viterbo countryside is Mediterranean with a continental edge: hot dry summers, moderately cold winters, and real differences between the milder lake basins and the cooler, windier Cimini hills. The rain gathers in autumn; the peak of heat and drought falls between July and August. If you're choosing a date, this table saves you half a day of searching.
| Month | Low | High | Rain | In practice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 4°C | 10°C | 68 mm | Cold and damp, night frosts in the valleys. |
| February | 4°C | 11°C | 83 mm | Hard winter. Good for frescoed interiors. |
| March | 6°C | 14°C | 77 mm | Unsettled and windy, first blossom. |
| April | 8°C | 17°C | 41 mm | Mild. Perfect for a day spent outdoors. |
| May | 12°C | 22°C | 45 mm | Superb. The historic gardens at their peak. |
| June | 16°C | 26°C | 23 mm | Warm and bright. The season opens. |
| July | 18°C | 29°C | 23 mm | Hot and dry. Better by the lakes. |
| August | 19°C | 29°C | 38 mm | Heavy by day, breezy evenings up in the hills. |
| September | 16°C | 25°C | 59 mm | The best month. The light is perfect. |
| October | 12°C | 20°C | 80 mm | Full autumn, colour in the beech woods. |
| November | 8°C | 15°C | 116 mm | The wettest month. A plan B is essential. |
| December | 5°C | 11°C | 91 mm | Sharply cold, and the hill towns are at their most atmospheric. |
Spring, April and May
The best window for an outdoor wedding and for photography in open country. The monumental parks and formal gardens — Villa Lante, Castello Ruspoli — come into full colour, and with highs between 17 and 22 degrees you can stay outside for hours without anyone suffering.
Summer, June to August
Long days and almost no rain, but highs reach thirty degrees easily. The work moves to the golden hour, late afternoon into sunset: it avoids the overhead light and the part of the day your guests will remember for the wrong reasons.
Autumn, September to November
September is superb, with highs around 25 degrees and light worth travelling for. October and November bring the warm colours and the turning woods, but also a sharp rise in rainfall — November averages a record 116 millimetres, and at that point the historic interiors stop being an alternative and become the main plan.
Winter, December to March
A hard season, with lows around four degrees. The tufa-stone towns take on an intimate, faintly decaying beauty. It is the right time of year for a wedding inside frescoed rooms and castles, using the soft light of the short days.
